Why Grow Your Own?
With just organic broccoli seeds, a jar and water, you can start sprouting at home and enjoy fresh, chemical-free, nutrient-packed sprouts any time! Store-bought sprouts can be expensive and sometimes lack freshness, but growing your own ensures you're getting the best quality every time. Plus, it’s fun and rewarding to watch them grow! I use these jars and seeds because I love how big and easy they are. I can grow more seeds at once as they are 50 oz in size.

How to Grow Broccoli Sprouts at Home
What You’ll Need
- 1–2 tablespoons organic broccoli sprouting seeds if using 32 oz jar. I use 50 oz jar so I add 3 tbsp.
- 1 large glass jar
- Sprouting lid or fine mesh cover
- Fresh, clean water ( I use filtered water)
- Bowl or jar stand for draining
Always choose seeds specifically labelled for sprouting rather than regular garden seeds.
Day 1: Soak the Seeds
Place the broccoli seeds in a clean glass jar and cover them generously with water.
Let the seeds soak for approximately 8 hours or overnight. This helps soften the outer coating and begins the germination process.
Day 2: Drain and Rinse
After soaking, drain all the water through the sprouting lid.
Add fresh water, gently swirl the seeds around, and drain them again. I rinsed them twice. Make sure you remove as much excess water as possible.
Position the Jar
Place the jar upside down at an angle in a bowl or on a sprouting stand. This allows extra water to drain while keeping air circulating through the jar.
Keep the jar away from direct sunlight while the seeds begin to sprout.
Rinse Twice a Day
Rinse and drain the sprouts twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening for the next 4 days.
Each time:
- Fill the jar with fresh water.
- Gently swirl the sprouts.
- Drain the water completely.
- Return the jar to its angled position.
Good drainage is important. The sprouts should remain moist, but they should never sit in standing water. Day 3: Let Them Green Up
After approximately three days, small leaves will begin to appear.
Place the jar somewhere with bright, indirect light for several hours. This will help the leaves turn a beautiful green. Avoid strong, direct sunlight, which may cause the jar to become too warm.
Day 5: Harvest Your Sprouts
Broccoli sprouts are usually ready within four to five days, depending on the temperature of your home.
Give them one final rinse with cold water and drain them very well. You can also use a salad spinner to remove excess moisture, which helps the sprouts stay fresh longer.
Store Them Properly
Allow the sprouts to dry as much as possible before transferring them to a clean, covered container.
Store them in the refrigerator and use them within a 3 to 4 days. Discard the sprouts if they develop an unpleasant or musty smell, become slimy, or look unusually dark.
Important Sprout Safety
Sprouts grow in warm, moist conditions, which can also allow harmful bacteria to multiply if they are present on the seeds. Start with clean equipment, wash your hands, use safe drinking water, and purchase seeds intended specifically for sprouting.
